ONLINE Introductory Bereavement EducationBereavement Services now has three online courses available, designed to provide healthcare professionals and community organizations with an introduction to bereavement care education: Caring for the Family Experiencing Perinatal Loss introduces perinatal bereavement care, focusing on the importance of interdisciplinary team support for bereaved parents and their families Theoretical Framework of Grief provides information about grief theory, factors influencing grief, and cardinal rules of grief support Communicating with the Bereaved takes a look at the need for supportive communication with the bereaved and offers functional “how to” advice aimed at making the job of the caregiver a little easier, a little more effective. Hospitals can use Bereavement Services’ new online courses as an introduction to bereavement care, a refresher for those who have already taken Bereavement Services courses, or as a tool for competency development. The new online courses allow caregivers the convenience of learning the material online, at home or at work, according to their own schedule. Recently, The Joint Commission adopted PC 8.70 (Comfort and dignity are optimized during end-of-life care), a standard that relates directly to our work. Measurement is by interventions that “address family and patient comfort, dignity, and psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual needs as appropriate, about death and grief” (EP1 [C]). The measurement of the standard also confirms “staff is educated about the unique needs of dying patients and their families and caregivers” (EP 2 [C]). As the recognized leader in professional bereavement education, all Bereavement Services courses are designed to help your facility comply with the Joint Commission standard on end-of-life care that includes bereavement. According to Bereavement Services Director Rana Limbo, PhD, RN, CNS-BC, “It is important to keep this standard in the forefront as you attempt to make sensitive, responsive bereavement care a reality in your healthcare setting.” For more information or to take a demo, click here www.bereavementservicesonline.org
